The add-ons listed here will block ads, expand functionality, notify you when you have mail, or just help you make web pages. Each add-on listed below is an excellent addition to the browser in its own way. The success of the Firefox 2 Add-ons list really drives us to get this up-to-date.

So, what are FireFox 3 Add-ons?
FireFox 3 Add-ons are small programs that add new functionality to your FireFox 3 web browser. They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature.

The official FireFox 3 Add-on Recommendation List (as of October 2008):

 AdBlock Plus
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
AdBlock is a unique extension in that it actually gives you the power to block ads, images (including flash ads) and even ad hosts from displaying at all in your browser! This is an extension you have to use in moderation. If you are too over zealous, you could block the whole internet!
 AdBlock Filterset.G Updater
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1136
This is a companion extension to Adblock or Adblock Plus and should be used in conjunction with it. This extension automatically downloads the latest version of Filterset.G every 4-7 days. Filterset.G is an excellent set of filters maintained by G for Adblock that blocks most ads on the internet.
 Extended Statusbar
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1433
Improves the status bar with number of loaded images, bytes downloaded, average download speed, load time, percentage of the page loaded
 Facebook Toolbar
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3794
Integrate your Facebook life into your browser. Adds links, features and search to brower.
 Firefox Showcase
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1810
Showcase is an extension thought to easily locate and select any open browser window in Firefox. One click of a button and you can see thumbnails of all of your open tabs. Very cool if you use a lot of tabs.
 FireFTP
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684
FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Mozilla Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers.
 FireGestures
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6366
Allows you to execute common commands (like page forward/backward, close tab, new tab) by simply moving around your mouse. Seems silly, but I can't see using Firefox without it now.
 Fission
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1951
Fission combines address bar and progress bar (Safari style). This extension makes the progress bar more visible and allows for a nice visual effect.
 Flashblock
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433
Never be annoyed by a Flash animation again! Blocks Flash so it won't get in your way, but if you want to see it, just click on the flashblock button in the box where the flash would be.
 Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410
If you use Firefox on more than one computer, you'll want Foxmarks. Install Foxmarks on each computer, and it works silently in the background to keep your bookmarks and (optionally) passwords synchronized.
 GMail Notifier
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/173
Allows checking for new Gmail messages directly from the browser's UI. A status bar item will show once installed, and a toolbar item can be added by customizing the toolbar.
 Google Calendar Notifier
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2528
This extension provides robust notifications and display of your Google Calendars for today, as well as showing any upcoming all day events for tomorrow.
 No Script
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
It allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from trusted domains of your choice, e.g. your home-banking web site, and guards the "trust boundaries" against cross-site scripting attacks (XSS).
 PDF Download
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636
Allows to choose whether you want to view a PDF file inside the browser (as PDF or HTML) or you want to download it!
 SaveSession
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4199
With Save Session, you can choose to save the current session and close Firefox for the next startup.
This works best if you USUALLY want to launch Firefox with your default homepages or blank page but SOMETIMES want to start with the previous session.
 Web Developer
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60
The Web Developer extension adds a menu and a toolbar to the browser with various web developer tools. The extension is highly configurable and contains many powerful features including CSS manipulation, multiple validation options and tools to display information about the current page
 WebMail Notifier
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4490
WebMail Notifier checks your webmail accounts and notifies the number of unread emails. You can use multiple accounts in a same host. Supports Hotmail, MSN, Live, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail
 Yahoo! Mail Notifier
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1264
This extension notifies you when new messages arrive in your Yahoo mailbox.

I wouldn't recommend Adblock to anyone that like to save their username and passwords on their computer. For certain websites it won't retain. Otherwise, great list!

I especially like the latest version of webmail notifier. Love the persistent pop-up!

Why wouldn't you recommend it?? Adblock blocks ads not your passwords

You know you can turn that pop-up off. It's popping up your email accounts not ads.
